Osinbajo unveils 10-year plan to make Ikenne tech hub

Precious Olugbodi

Former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has proposed introducing artificial intelligence (AI) education from primary school in Ikenne, Ogun State.

His suggestion is part of a 10-year plan to make the community a technology hub in Africa.

Osinbajo unveiled the proposal, known as the Ikenne 2036 Plan while delivering a lecture at the 50th Ereke Day anniversary organised by the Ikenne Development Association.

He proposed introducing AI literacy early in children's education, alongside robotics training, well-equipped laboratories, AI-powered learning tools and specialised training for teachers.

The plan also includes establishing a campus for AI and advanced systems to develop technological solutions for sectors such as agriculture, healthcare and education.

“The next 50 years will be shaped by artificial intelligence. We can be the village in Africa that trains the best minds and develops the most transformative AI tools,” he said.

Osinbajo said the initiative could build on Ikenne's educational heritage, particularly the legacy of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who championed free education in the former Western Region.

He added that the proposed 10-year plan should have clear targets, defined responsibilities and a system for monitoring progress to ensure its implementation.

The proposal seeks to prepare children and young people in the community for opportunities in emerging technologies, although its impact will depend on funding and implementation.
