EDITORIAL STANDARDS
Our standards
These are the rules every story is filed under. They are short on purpose: a standard nobody can recite is a standard nobody applies at eleven at night.
01
Good news still needs two sourcesNothing runs on a press release. If a claim can be counted, we ask for the count and publish where it came from.
02
We name who paidSponsored content is labelled in the same size type as the headline, and never written by the newsroom.
03
No anonymous praiseWe grant anonymity to protect people from harm, never to let an official compliment themselves.
04
Numbers get a dateEvery figure carries the period it covers and the body that produced it, so it can be checked later.
05
Corrections are permanentWe do not silently edit. Every change of substance appears in the public log with a timestamp.
06
Sources see nothing before publicationWe check facts with people. We never send drafts, headlines or photos for approval.
