Eight simple steps for Nigerians overseas to renew passports
The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has introduced the contactless application system for Nigerians in the Diaspora to quickly renew their passports.
The system eliminates human contacts and embassy visits for biometric capturing, enhancing the chances of getting the passports within days.
Here are the eight simple steps for Nigerians in the diaspora to renew their passports without human contacts or agents:
1. Start Online Application:
• Go to the Nigeria Immigration Service Portal.
• Select "Apply from Outside Nigeria" and choose "Apply for Renewal or Re-issue".
2. Verify Identity:
• Create an account and verify your identity using your National Identification Number (NIN) and date of birth.
3. Fill Form & Pay Booklet Fee:
• Complete the application form, select your processing embassy/mission, upload required documents (including an ICAO-compliant passport photo), and pay for your preferred booklet (32 or 64 pages).
• You will receive an Application ID and Reference Number.
4. Opt-In for Contactless & Use NIS Mobile App:
• Under the application status/appointment section, select "Opt-in for Contactless".
• Download the NIS Mobile App from the Google Play Store or iOS App Store.
• Open Passport Application Services > Passport Biometric Enrolment, and enter your Application ID and Reference Number.
5. Remote Biometrics Capture:
• Capture your facial image, take a liveness verification check, and capture your fingerprints (left hand, right hand, and thumbs) directly through your smartphone following the app's guidelines.
• Pay the non-refundable Contactless Service Fee.
6. Mailing Documents:
• Once your biometrics are submitted and reviewed, print your completed application form, payment receipts, and attach your current international passport.
• Place everything inside a self-addressed return envelope and mail it to your selected processing embassy or high commission.
7. Pay for the passport fees, which are not refundable.
8. Tracking:
• Track your application progress after about two to three weeks via NIS Tracking Portal or the NIS Mobile App.
