FG approves design for new Lagos airport monorail
The airport monorail will improve mobility and ease passengers' commutation to the city.
The Federal Government has approved the design for a new Lagos Aiport monorail that will usher commuters and air travellers to a seamless intermodal transit experience.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo confirmed top officials and engineering teams have appraised and approved the blueprint for the monorail project.
The review session included the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and engineering teams from the institutions.
Designed to ease the notorious traffic bottlenecks around the airport axis, the monorail will directly connect commuters and the flying public from the Ikeja Railway Station—the terminal point of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line—straight to the newly reconstructed Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal 1.
According to the approved design, the monorail route will feature five strategic stops to serve local commuters and domestic/international travelers.
These are: Ikeja Station (Red Line interchange); Domestic Airport Station; Beesam Station ; Toll Gate Station and MMI Airport Station (International Terminal 1)
Keyamo noted that the monorail is an integral component of the ongoing comprehensive reconstruction of MMIA Terminal 1, Nigeria’s busiest aviation hub and primary international gateway.
Once completed, the project will allow passengers to board a train on the Lagos Mainland, transfer at Ikeja and ride directly into the domestic or international airport terminals without contending with road traffic along Airport Road.
