IGP honours retired Ogun traffic warden
The popular traffic warden has received honour for her professionalism, dedication and devotion to service for the highest police authorities.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has honoured a retired Deputy Superintendent of Traffic (DST), Anifa Bello Abiodun, with an Award of Recognition and cash support for her outstanding service to the Force.
The presentation took place at the Force Headquarters, Abuja where Disu commended the retired officer for professionalism, discipline, resilience and dedication to traffic management during her service with the Ogun State Police Command, particularly in Abeokuta
Abiodun was recognised for commitment to duty and consistent service to members of the public, which earned her the goodwill and appreciation of residents and road users in the communities where she served.
Speaking during the presentation, the IGP said public appreciation of the police was largely influenced by the professionalism and responsibility with which officers discharged their duties.
He noted that public dissatisfaction was often directed at misconduct by individual personnel rather than the institution itself, expressing satisfaction that Abiodun had earned the respect and recognition of the community she served.
Disu stressed the importance of balancing accountability with recognition, saying the police would continue to sanction misconduct while rewarding personnel who demonstrated integrity, professionalism and exemplary service.
According to him, recognising officers who distinguish themselves in the line of duty reinforces the values expected of police personnel and encourages others to uphold the highest standards of service.
The IGP reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to promoting accountability, rewarding exemplary conduct and recognising personnel whose dedication strengthens public confidence and contributes to effective community policing.
For years, Aunty Anifa, as she was popularly called, was a consistent and committed presence on the streets of Abeokuta, Ogun State. Though not widely recognised or celebrated, her quiet dedication set her apart. One moment defined her legacy more than any formal commendation.
At the NNPC Junction in Abeokuta, while upholding traffic regulations, she was physically assaulted by a superior officer without provocation and in public. She remained composed, did not retaliate and continued her duties professionally despite public humiliation that would have discouraged many.
The Force investigated the incident, sanctioned the offending officer and demoted him. Anifa continued her work, demonstrating unwavering commitment.
Abiodun thanked the IGP for the year, saying she would like to remain a traffic warden in another world.
