Mother of two breaks 61-year-old academic record
She is a proof that juggling work with marriage and studies is a big possibility, serving as a shinning model to thousands.
Despite running a home, working and nursing two children, Mrs. Deborah Iwalola Johnson-Opeseitan, achieved a perfect 5.00/5.00 CGPA completing a Master’s degree in Zoology (Natural Resources Conservation) at the University of Lagos.
The mother of two and staff member of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) recorded the highest ever grade in the 61-year-old department.
Yet her academic journey was anything but straightforward. She initially aspired to study Medicine and Surgery but eventually earned a Bachelor’s degree in Botany from the University of Ibadan in 2008 after her JAMB score did not meet the requirements for Medicine.
She later pursued a Master’s degree in Public Health (Epidemiology) at the University of Ibadan before marriage, motherhood and other life circumstances put her PhD plans on hold.
During the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent academic disruptions, Deborah decided to return to university, pursuing Natural Resources Conservation at UNILAG.
While balancing her studies with motherhood, work and family responsibilities, she maintained outstanding academic performance and eventually achieved the perfect 5.00/5.00 CGPA.
Deborah attributed the feat to her husband and workplace supervisor for support throughout the journey, encouraging others to remain diligent, committed to their goals and surrounded by people who support their aspirations.
