Nigeria dominates Forbes list of 15 Africa’s influential icons
The preponderance of Nigerians in the list confirms its status as a nation of giants in the continent.
Nigeria produced the highest number of nationals in Forbes Africa’s inaugural list of 15 icons, reaffirming her position as giant producer in all spheres of life.
The magazine’s “The Icons” selection published in its October–November 2026 issue is to mark 15 years of Forbes Africa documenting the continent’s business leaders, cultural figures, innovators and changemakers.
The publication is a special anniversary edition of Forbes Africa celebrating individuals whose achievements and ideas have helped shape the continent.
While others produced one or two nationals on the list, Nigeria produced a staggering number of four out of the 15 recognised icons in the nation.
Nigerians who made the list include Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote; media entrepreneur Mo Abudu; World Trade Organisation Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Grammy award winner Burna Boy.
Other honourees include South African businessman Patrice Motsepe; Zimbabwean entrepreneur Strive Masiyiwa; former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf; Ethiopian athletics legend Haile Gebrselassie; former Ivorian footballer Didier Drogba and comedian Trevor Noah.
Dangote was recognised for building one of Africa’s largest industrial and business groups with interests spanning cement, fertiliser, sugar and petroleum refining.
Okonjo-Iweala’s inclusion reflects her career in public service and international economic leadership, including her role at the WTO, where she became the organisation’s first woman and first African director-general in 2021.
Abudu has played a prominent role in African film, television and entertainment, building a media business that has helped bring African stories to wider audiences. She recently commissioned the EbonyLife in UK to serve as the first black and African entertainment hub in London.
For Burna Boy, the recognition adds to a growing list of international milestones, including his Grammy victory, global performances and the commercial success of his music.
Burna Boy’s work frequently draws on African identity, history and social experiences, while his international performances have helped bring those themes to audiences across several continents.
