Nigerian doctor becomes first African UICC President

Precious Olugbodi

Dr Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu has become the first African President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), a global organisation working to improve cancer prevention, treatment and care.

According to an announcement on the UICC’s official website, Shinkafi-Bagudu will serve a two-year term from 2026 to 2028.

She is the founder of Nigeria’s Medicaid Cancer Foundation and was elected president-elect at the organisation’s 2024 General Assembly.

She has also served on the UICC board for six years, contributing to its strategic priorities.

In her first address as president, the doctor expressed commitment to strengthening cooperation among cancer organisations, improving access to cancer services and ensuring that cancer remains a priority on national and global health agendas.

“It is a great honour to take on the UICC presidency at a time when our collective action has never been more important,” she said.

She added that international cooperation, knowledge-sharing and stronger partnerships were essential to closing gaps in cancer care.

“No country can meet this challenge alone. By working across borders, sharing knowledge and experience, and building stronger partnerships, we can close the gaps that continue to cost lives,” she said.

Her appointment marks a milestone for Nigeria and Africa, placing an African leader at the head of an international organisation working to reduce the global burden of cancer.

The UICC brings together more than 1,100 member organisations across over 170 countries and territories.
