Olu of Warri hosts Tunde Onakoya, highlights chess’ role in youth empowerment
The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has hosted Guinness World Record holder and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde Onakoya, and his team during a courtesy visit to his palace.
The visit provided an opportunity to discuss the role of chess in promoting mental development, leadership, empowerment and social change, particularly among children from underserved communities.
During the visit, the monarch engaged Tunde in a game of chess, highlighting the game’s potential to develop strategic thinking, foresight and critical decision-making.
According to a post on the monarch’s official Instagram page, the encounter also provided an opportunity to reflect on how the unfolding moves in chess mirror real-life situations and the importance of strategy in navigating challenges.
He also believes chess can inspire hope, nurture potential and create opportunities for children from underserved communities.
He also commended Tunde and his organisation, Chess in Slums Africa (CISA), for their efforts to unlock the potential of young minds and equip children with the confidence, skills and mindset to pursue a brighter future.
Through Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde uses the game to reach children in disadvantaged communities, promoting learning and creating opportunities for personal development.
