Tinubu becomes first President in 66 years to receive UN budget
President Bola Tinubu has become the first Nigerian leader in 66 years to receive the proposed United Nations (UN) budget through the process led by Nigeria's permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim.
Ibrahim presented the proposed 2027 UN budget to Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday, October 18.
Speaking after the presentation, Ibrahim highlighted Nigeria’s historic role in the process, saying the country had returned to the leadership of the UN General Assembly’s Fifth Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Matters after 66 years.
“This is the first time in 66 years that Nigeria will chair the Budget and Administration Committee,” he said.
The committee oversees the UN’s budget and administrative affairs, including the resources required to fund its programmes and operations.
Nigeria’s chairmanship gives the country an opportunity to contribute to deliberations on the financial priorities of the international organisation.
The proposed budget will undergo further deliberations and adjustments before member states approve the final figures.
