Tinubu receives WACP fellowship, urges doctors to curb brain drain

President Bola Tinubu has received a fellowship from the West African College of Physicians (WACP) in recognition of his administration’s commitment to health sector reforms.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced this in a statement on X on Thursday, October 22, 2026.

At the ceremony at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu urged the college to use its forthcoming conference to develop practical, lasting solutions to medical brain drain across West Africa.

He noted that the migration of skilled healthcare professionals puts pressure on health systems, limits access to essential medical services and increases the workload of available personnel.

“We are more challenged in Africa than anywhere else,” Tinubu said, while also highlighting the need for preventive measures against diseases and infections.

WACP President and Chairman of its Board of Trustees, Dr Mamadou Mourtala Ka, said the fellowship recognises presidents who have made significant contributions to healthcare delivery across the sub-region.

The college’s Secretary-General, Professor Musa Dankyau, said the fellowship had been awarded only eight times in its 50-year history.
