What we collect, why, and how to get rid of it. Written to be read, not to be survived.

What we collect

Reading data: pages viewed, time on page, and rough location at city level, aggregated and never sold. An email address, if you ask for a series alert — nothing else is required. A name and email, only if you choose to comment under your name. Contact details you send us in a tip; if you submit anonymously we do not ask for or store any.

Cookies and advertising

We set one cookie to remember your theme and one to count free article views. Advertising here is sold directly and measured with aggregate counts — we do not run behavioural retargeting, and we do not share reader-level data with advertisers. Decline measurement cookies and the site works exactly the same.

How long we keep it

Analytics data is aggregated after 90 days. Subscription records are deleted 30 days after you unsubscribe. Tip material is kept as long as the story is legally live, then destroyed unless you asked us to keep it.

Your rights

Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act you can ask for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to [email protected] and we will act within 21 days. Journalistic material is exempt from deletion where a story is in the public interest — we will tell you if that applies.

Who we share with

Our email provider, our hosting provider and our analytics provider, each under contract and none permitted to use the data for their own purposes. We do not sell data. If we are ever compelled to hand over information by a court, we will tell you unless the order forbids it.
