Thirteen-year-old Eniola Shokunbi designed a low-cost air filter that eliminates over 99% of airborne viruses in classrooms, securing $11.5 million in state funding.

The Connecticut State Bond Commission approved the $11.5 million grant to manufacture and install the filtration devices in public schools across Connecticut.

Developed alongside scientists at the University of Connecticut, her design uses basic materials like box fans, furnace filters, and cardboard costing just $60 per unit.

Rigorous testing by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified the device as over 99% effective at trapping respiratory viruses and bacteria.

Her project aims to improve indoor air quality, decrease student absenteeism, and inspire youth participation in STEAM fields.

She said: “I am dedicated to improving indoor air quality in classrooms and homes across the country by promoting the use of simple Corsi-Rosenthal air filters. Driven by a strong commitment to protect children and schools from poor indoor air quality, I took decisive action to address this critical issue.

‘’I learned that this was an inexpensive DIY air filter, something you can make with just $60. That’s a really small price to pay for the benefits and protection it provides.’’
