Awoniyi wins best of Africa award for charity, grassroots football development

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has won the Beyond the Pitch Award at the 2026 Best of Africa Awards in recognition of his charitable activities and contributions to grassroots football development.

Awoniyi received the honour at the awards ceremony on Monday, October 26, celebrating Africans whose influence extends beyond their professional achievements to community development and philanthropy.

The Nigerian forward has supported young footballers through the Taiwo Awoniyi Foundation, including initiatives aimed at providing aspiring players with resources and opportunities to develop their talents.

Earlier this month, Awoniyi donated football boots to 350 young players participating in the Kwara Kiddies League, reinforcing his commitment to nurturing emerging football talent.

The initiative forms part of his broader involvement in grassroots football, where access to equipment, training and exposure can help young players pursue professional careers.

Awoniyi also serves as chairman of the Kwara Kiddies League, which provides a platform for young footballers to develop their skills and gain visibility.

The Best of Africa Awards celebrates African excellence across sports, entertainment, entrepreneurship and media, with an emphasis on philanthropy and positive community impact.

Awoniyi’s recognition highlights the role athletes can play in supporting youth development and creating opportunities beyond the football pitch.
