Delta extends health workers’ retirement age to 65

Precious Olugbodi

The Delta State Government has approved an extension of the retirement age for skilled clinical health professionals in government hospitals from 60 to 65 years.

The policy also increases the maximum length of service from 35 to 40 years, whichever comes first.

The approval was granted by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Monday, according to a statement by the State Government on Tuesday.

It covers 26 cadres of skilled clinical health professionals actively involved in clinical services in government hospitals across the state.

The government said the policy aims to address manpower shortages, retain experienced medical personnel and strengthen healthcare delivery.

Eligible officers must apply through their Chief Medical Directors six months before turning 60 or completing 35 years of service. Applicants must also undergo medical fitness screening by the Ministry of Health.

The extension applies only to clinical health professionals working in government hospitals. Personnel serving in ministries and extra-ministerial departments are excluded.
