Djimon Hounsou, Yaya DaCosta, Femi Adebayo attend AFRIFF reception
Beninese-American actor Djimon Hounsou, American actress Yaya DaCosta and Nollywood actor Femi Adebayo were among the celebrities and industry figures who attended a reception organised to mark the 15th anniversary of the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF).
The event held on Monday at the United States Consulate in Lagos and attracted several Nigerian and international personalities from the entertainment and film industries.
The reception was organised to celebrate the festival's 15-year journey and its contributions to the development and promotion of African cinema.
Speaking at the gathering, a United States representative, Brandon Hudspeth, praised the growth of AFRIFF and credited the leadership and partnerships behind the festival for its achievements over the years.
Hudspeth also spoke about the longstanding relationship between the United States and Nigeria, drawing attention to the history of the US government's residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.
He explained that the building was completed in 1947, at a time when Nigeria was moving towards independence. According to him, its establishment represented America's early interest in building a relationship with Nigeria.
He noted that the partnership between both countries continues to grow, adding that the United States remains interested in Nigeria, its people, culture and government.
The US representative further described AFRIFF's development over the years as an example of what strong leadership and commitment could achieve.
AFRIFF founder, Chioma Ude, discussed this year's festival theme, Frames of the Future, describing it as a reflection of the determination and enthusiasm driving African cinema.
Ude said the gathering represented the hope and passion surrounding the continent's film industry, adding that the future of African filmmaking would require dedication and collective efforts from stakeholders.
She acknowledged the difficulties involved in organising the annual festival, explaining that its continued existence depended largely on the commitment of its partners, supporters and friends.
The AFRIFF founder also noted that despite the challenges of running the festival, the organisers remained determined to keep pushing for the growth of African cinema.
Other notable personalities who attended the reception included actress Ini Edo, former senator Ben Murray-Bruce, comedian Yaw, media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, reality TV star Boma and comedian Bovi.
The gathering brought together entertainers, filmmakers and other stakeholders to celebrate AFRIFF's contribution to the African entertainment industry as it marks 15 years of promoting filmmaking and creating opportunities for African stories to reach wider audiences.
