Nigerian researcher Professor Andrew Agbaje has been awarded a €1.5 million European Research Council Starting Grant to lead a five-year study on youth vaping and its long-term health effects.
Agbaje, a researcher at the University of Eastern Finland, will lead the VAPE-HABIT study, which will examine how vaping affects the heart, brain, kidneys, liver and metabolic health of young people.
The grant is one of the most competitive research awards in Europe, designed to support promising early-career scientists with ambitious projects.
The study addresses a growing global public health concern as e-cigarette use among adolescents and young adults continues to rise.
The award highlights the strength of Finland–Nigeria scientific collaboration and underscores the impact of African researchers in European institutions.
Agbaje's work will involve long-term tracking and clinical assessments, with findings expected to inform public health policies on youth vaping across Europe and beyond.
The project is expected to begin in early 2027 with initial results anticipated within the first two years.
Further details on the study design and participating institutions are expected to be released as implementation progresses. #nigeria24
