Police assure NYSC members, INEC staff Of safety over 2027 polls
The Nigeria Police Force has assured members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and other ad hoc staff engaged by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of adequate security during the 2027 general elections.
The police gave the assurance amid growing concerns over the safety of corps members.
Speaking during a joint briefing by security agencies on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, said the police had carried out a detailed security assessment and were putting measures in place to protect electoral personnel.
Iniedu explained that the police were working with INEC and other security agencies to provide security for corps members and other temporary electoral workers before, during and after the elections.
He noted that criminals could attempt to target individuals and groups they considered vulnerable, particularly as security agencies strengthen protection around other possible targets.
The police spokesman recalled that during the Osun State governorship election, the force engaged corps members, their parents and other relevant stakeholders to address concerns about their safety.
He said similar arrangements would be made ahead of the 2027 general elections to ensure that young Nigerians involved in the electoral process could carry out their duties without fear.
According to him, the police are strengthening their collaboration with other security agencies through existing inter-agency arrangements while maintaining regular engagement with INEC.
Iniedu also disclosed that additional security personnel would be deployed as part of preparations for the elections.
He added that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, had directed the immediate distribution of operational equipment and other logistics needed by officers to carry out their duties effectively.
The police further assured corps members and other young Nigerians who would participate in the elections that their protection remained a major concern for the force.
