VIDEO: British Prof sings KSA’s song word-for-word
Respected British ethnomusicologist, Professor Lucy Durán, has won hearts of Nigerians by singing a song by Juju legend King Sunny Ade (KSA) word-for-word at a recent event in the United Kingdom.
The Professor of Music at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS, University of London) has spent decades studying, documenting, and teaching African music with a profound focus on West African musical traditions, history and storytelling.
To demonstrate her deep love for Nigerian songs, she sang a track in the famed Ori album of KSA at a special Black History Month cultural exchange event titled "African Roots, Shared Rhythms".
The event, which took place on Friday, 30 October 2026, inside the Richard Hoggart Building at Goldsmiths, University of London, was organized by the Tayese Academy of Arts & Culture London CIC and hosted by Olanrewaju Sharafa.
In a video that has since gone viral, she is seen taking over the microphone and singing the song word-for-word to the admiration of guests.
She even hummed the beat component of the classic song to prove her deep admiration of the music.
Observers and cultural commentators have celebrated her deep appreciation for the music as beautiful proof that great artistry transcends linguistic and geographical boundaries.
