VIDEO: How stranger sacrificed life to rescue me, by #EndSARS survivor

A survivor of the October 20, 2020 Lekki Toll Gate shooting, Dabira Adeyinka, has recounted how a stranger rescued her during the #EndSARS protest while losing his life in the process..

Adeyinka, a human rights activist and #EndSARS protest frontliner, recalled that she was still on stage with a microphone when gunshots rang out and protesters began running in different directions.

“I just saw people falling, people running. I was blanked out,” she recounted.

According to her, an ex-military man had advised protesters to get Nigerian and Nigerian Army flags, explaining that people in uniform were expected to respect the national flag.

She said protesters were subsequently encouraged to sit on the ground, raise their Nigerian flags and chant the national anthem to demonstrate they were peaceful.

Adeyinka recalled that more than 500 protesters eventually sat on the ground, despite the gunfire and panic at the scene.

However, while she remained on stage, an armed man reportedly pointed in her direction.

She said a man suddenly got up from among the seated protesters, grabbed and dragged her away from the scene, taking bullets in the process.

“I didn't even know where I was. I didn't believe I would survive it,” she said.

Adeyinka's account highlights the intervention of the unidentified man, whose reported sacrifice saved her life during the Lekki Toll Gate shooting, one of the defining events of the #EndSARS protests against police brutality in Nigeria.
