FG fulfills $100,000 pledge to Super Falcons for WAFCON 2025 win

Nigeria's Super Falcons players have received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each from the Federal Government following for the 2025 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) win.

Members of the team's technical crew and officials also received $50,000 each, completing the financial rewards promised by President Bola Tinubu after the women's national team secured their 10th continental title.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) announced the development in a statement on Monday, confirming that the government had fulfilled its financial commitment to the players and other members of the team.

The payment comes after the players received documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and certificates confirming their national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for keeping his promise to the team, noting that the fulfilment of the rewards would encourage athletes across the country.

He said the President had fully honoured his commitment to the Super Falcons, adding that the gesture was a major boost to Nigerian sports and recognition of the team's outstanding achievement.

According to the commission, the payment was made possible through collaboration between the NSC and the Ministries of Finance, Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs as well as Housing and Urban Development.

Dikko further noted that the timely release of the rewards marked a positive change from previous situations where Nigerian athletes had to wait several years before receiving benefits promised to them after major competitions.

He said the development would motivate athletes to represent the country with greater confidence, knowing that their efforts and achievements would be appreciated by the government.

The Super Falcons won their 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations title in July 2025 after staging an impressive comeback against hosts Morocco in the final.

Nigeria came from two goals down to defeat the Moroccan team 3-2 in Rabat, extending their record as the most successful nation in the history of the women's continental competition.

Tinubu announced the reward package during a presidential reception for the team on July 28, 2025. At the event, he promised each player the naira equivalent of $100,000, while members of the coaching crew and other officials were to receive $50,000 each.

The President also promised the players three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and national honours in recognition of their achievement.

The latest development follows a similar reward given to Nigeria's senior women's basketball team, D'Tigress, whose players received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each in September 2026 after winning their fifth consecutive Women's AfroBasket championship in 2025.

Their officials also received $50,000 each, while the team had earlier collected documents for three-bedroom apartments and certificates of the OON national honour in February 2026.

The Federal Government had also presented housing documents, confirmation of land allocations in Abuja and national honours to members of the Super Eagles in December 2025 following their second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Côte d'Ivoire.

The latest payment to the Super Falcons brings the financial aspect of Tinubu's pledge to a conclusion, following the earlier presentation of housing documents and national honours to the players.
