Lagos promotes peace in border communities with new signposts

Precious Olugbodi

The Lagos State Government has begun installing boundary signposts across border communities to promote peaceful coexistence and prevent encroachment.

The initiative is being implemented by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development.

It aims to clarify boundaries between Lagos communities and neighbouring states to reduce disputes.

Speaking at the commencement of the exercise, the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Mrs Kikelomo Bolarinwa, said the government was committed to clearly marking state boundaries.

She explained that the installations followed the official specifications of the Office of the Surveyor-General.

According to Bolarinwa, the signposts would help prevent encroachment and ensure that residents of border communities are properly captured in government welfare programmes.

She added that the initiative would support infrastructure development, strengthen local economies and improve living conditions. It is also expected to help reduce rural-to-urban migration.

Bolarinwa urged residents to protect the signposts and avoid actions that could disrupt peace. She warned that anyone found destroying the installations would face punishment.

She also reaffirmed the government's commitment to extending development projects to communities across the state, particularly rural areas, under its T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda.

The ministry has installed signposts in Eredo-Epe, around Mojoda, Itokin-Ijebu Ode Road, Ikorodu-Shagamu Road, Ojodu-Alagbole Road, Owode-Apa Road and the Seme border.

The initiative is expected to promote peaceful relations among neighbouring communities and support development across Lagos.
