My commitment to public service began at 14, Hamzat recalls Awolowo's influence
Lagos Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has recounted how an encounter with the late nationalist and former Premier of the Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, at 14 influenced his commitment to public service.
Hamzat shared the experience in a Facebook post, recalling that he met Awolowo during a campaign visit to his school.
According to him, Awolowo told him, “A nation rises when people of honour and ability choose to serve.”
He said the words had remained with him over the years and continued to shape his understanding of leadership and service.
The Deputy Governor also spoke about his family background, noting that his father, Alhaji Mufutau Hamzat, served in the Lagos Assembly and as Commissioner for Transportation under former Governor Lateef Jakande.
He added that growing up in Mushin, Lagos, taught him the importance of basic infrastructure, including good roads, drainage systems and reliable electricity, in improving people's daily lives.
Reflecting on his experience in government, Hamzat said society should be measured by how it treats its most vulnerable members.
He recalled the rescue of a 10-year-old boy found under Oshodi Bridge after fleeing an unsafe home, describing the experience as one that strengthened his resolve to build a Lagos where every child is protected, regardless of background.
