Sanwo-Olu meets Google over maternal healthcare in Lagos

Doris Israel Ijeoma

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has met with a delegation from Google to discuss how technology can be used to improve maternal healthcare services across the state.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed this in a post on his X page after receiving the delegation, led by Olumide Balogun, Google's Director for East and West Africa, at Lagos House, Marina.

The meeting focused on exploring ways technology could help identify challenges in maternal healthcare, improve planning and ensure pregnant women receive proper medical attention.

The Governor said Lagos had recorded progress in reducing maternal deaths through investments in healthcare facilities, the availability of skilled birth attendants and improved emergency medical services.

He explained that the State had also identified districts with high maternal health challenges, monitored problems affecting communities and worked on improving referral systems for pregnant women in need of medical attention.

According to him, some expectant mothers, particularly in areas with limited access to healthcare facilities, still depend on traditional birth attendants and may not receive timely medical care when complications arise.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged that more work was needed to address the challenges and reduce maternal deaths across the state.

He added that his administration remained open to partnerships that could use technology to identify gaps in the healthcare system early, improve planning and expand access to safe and timely maternal healthcare.

The Governor maintained that every pregnant woman in Lagos should be able to access proper medical care regardless of the community where she lives.
