UNIUYO SUG VP gets Kenya retreat sponsorship after backlash
The Students’ Union Government (SUG) vice-president of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), Deborah Edet, has received a full sponsorship to attend an Executive Leadership Retreat in Kenya following online backlash over an alleged incident involving her predecessor’s portrait.
Jamie Pajoel announced the sponsorship in a Facebook post, explaining that he contacted Edet after reading publications accusing her of destroying the portrait.
Pajoel said Edet gave him a different account of the incident and maintained that she had not destroyed the portrait as alleged.
He also criticised the alleged campaign to discredit the student leader, saying young people should work together rather than engage in propaganda against one another.
According to Pajoel, the sponsorship will enable Edet to join 100 industry leaders from around the world at the retreat in Kenya from March 15 to 22, 2027.
He said the opportunity was intended to support Edet’s interest in developing her leadership capacity.
Congratulating her, Pajoel said the negative publicity had ultimately opened the door to a global opportunity for her.
