Edo resumes Old Sapele road construction, opens up seven communities

Admin

Edo State Government has resumed construction work on Old Benin–Sapele Road including 13 adjoining streets.

The road, when completed, is expected to open up seven communities along the corridor with a view to improved accessibility, development and economic opportunities.

An extensive drainage infrastructure designed to address erosion and flooding, is also being constructed.

Speaking after an inspection visit to the project site, promoter of Edo is Nigeria’s Construction Site, Mr. John Mayaki, said the construction of the old Benin-Sapele road confirmed Governor Okpebholo as the “architect of modern Edo State."

Mayaki noted that the scale of road construction and drainage development across the communities was massive.

He said the project demonstrated the Governor’s commitment to opening up communities to civilisation, progress and development through modern road infrastructure.

Mayaki also visited adjoining streets undergoing construction through the Obe, Evbukhu and Ohogbohi axes towards Ogheghe.

He visited Bello Avenue, Christopher Osewingie Street, Ekhae–Ugbor Road, Osasogie Street, Alex Street, Efoze Obaze Street, Nehizena Street off Second Obe and Evbukhu Road.

Mayaki commended Governor Okpebholo for construction of what he termed 'substantial drainage channels to control erosion, improve stormwater evacuation and protect the roads from premature deterioration."

He said: "The significance of the project extends beyond the construction of individual streets. The interconnected road network will provide alternative access routes and improve movement between neighboring communities.

"This development represents a shift from isolated road rehabilitation towards the construction of integrated infrastructure that addresses both accessibility and environmental challenges.

"The Old Sapele Road project forms part of the Okpebholo administration’s wider road construction programme across Edo State.

"When completed, the road network and accompanying drainage infrastructure are expected to improve transportation, reduce erosion-related disruptions and strengthen economic and social connections across the Ekae–Ogheghe corridor."
